Visiting Budapest with Children

There is plenty for children to see and do in the Hungarian capital, so if you’re travelling with a young family you shouldn’t let that put you off. Budapest is full of culture and mystery, and will make an excellent change from the usual family destinations on the Costa Del Sol.

Children have sensitive skin, so you might want to avoid visiting during the summer months when the temperature can reach 29 Celsius. Visiting during the school holidays in April or May would suit better, as the temperature is milder but there are still plenty of hours of sunshine. The benefit of flying in the low peak seasons is that flights will be less crowded and hopefully cheaper as well! Look out for budget airlines like Easyjet and Ryanair who are two of the cheapest European airline carriers.

The City Park (Városligeti Park) is the perfect place to spend a day entertaining your little ones. The park is home to the Budapest amusement park, the Budapest Zoo, the Botanical Gardens, and the Circus. There are a number of baby animals, Hungarian farm animals, and activities children can take part in such as snake petting.

The Children’s Railway is an interesting way to experience the leafy hills on the outskirts of Budapest. The railway is operated by children between the ages of 10-14, under the full supervision of adults of course. Your little ones will enjoy watching the other children controlling the train.

The River-ride bus along is a fun way for children to enjoy and experience the sights and sounds of the Hungarian capital. The bus takes a guided tour around the city, and then at the end splashes into the River Danube for a river cruise.

For cooling off there is the Aquaworld water park just outside Budapest- one of the biggest water based theme parks in Europe. It has a wave pool, a surf pool, and giant slides to keep children entertained (and a spa for the adults). There is a ‘Kids World’ for very small children with a soft play area and shallow pools. Of course, parental supervision is required at all times in this pool.

Animal loving little ones may also be interested in a visit to the Tropicarium, which is mostly an aquarium but also has a small ‘rainforest’ area with monkeys, birds and reptiles. There is also a special room with local Hungarian fish; some of which are endangered.
